Your Major Sucks.
Of all the nationally successful programs on the BYU campus, there is one, I submit, that quietly surpasses them all. It cranks out national work, day in and day out, without looking for fame or recognition from the Daily Universe (as a tangent, I find it ironic that BYU's newspaper uses the word "Universe" in its title... For most people here, BYU is their universe. The sign out front that reads: "The World is Our Campus" would be more accurate if it read: "The Campus is Our World." Maybe I will rearrange it someday.), the BYU website (which is an item that merits a lengthy post of its own. It's pure garbage.), or anything else of that Nature.
"But the Marriott School of Business is ranked as the Best in the Nation!" Great. I don't care. Here's why:
BYU Advertising produces professional-grade work for national clients day in and day out. Clients like Ford, AOL, Electronic Arts, Goorin Hats, Walden Media (Charlotte's Webb, Amazing Grace, and the next movie in the Narnia series, "Prince Caspian"), Yahoo!, the Library of Congress, POW! Comic Books (working side by side with Stan Lee, the creator of Spiderman and the X-Men, as well as many others), L'Oréal International, and about 4 different projects for the National Ad Council (TV Boss, Generous Nation, C-Change, and the Coalition for Healthy Children.), as well as bunch of others. We do this stuff, every day, as though it was common place on campus. The truth is... its not. We've won awards, set precedent, and up-staged some of the world's largest agencies based upon concepts as well as creative execution.
This next week, Electronic Arts (perhaps the LARGEST video game production/distribution company), is paying for 10 of us students to come to San Francisco, play a game they are yet to announce the release of, and start working on a campaign for it.
Tell me that is not incredible. Tell me that, and I will slap you.
What an honor and a blessing it is to be able to involved in work like this! We are getting real world experience, and getting PAID to do it— as students. When we graduate, our portfolios will be stocked full of professional work, and not merely mock, concepted, and poorly executed campaigns.
So, Marriott school of Business.. I am glad you're great. How's the right side of your brain? Painfully neglected, I'd venture...
